Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Dr Booher has been involved with many advancements in dentistry through his years in practice and is excited about the opportunity that working with Obstructive Sleep Apnea provides.

Recent advancements in Home Sleep Testing make it easier and less costly to screen for Obstructive Sleep Apnea without having to go to a sleep lab and spend the night. Dentists can take a more active role working with primary care physicians and sleep doctors in both screening and treating this disease. The Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is the Gold Standard for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea. For many patients the traditional treatment of wearing a CPAP to bed at night is not comfortable or they have problems where they seek an alternative treatment.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has stated the first line of treatment for both mild and moderate OSA is mandibular oral appliance therapy from a dentist with advanced training in sleep medicine.  This allows the dentist to partner with both primary care and sleep physicians to help screen and render effective treatment for this disease.  The effects of OSA include snoring, excessive daytime tiredness, acid reflux, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, stroke, weight-gain, hormone changes, insulin resistance, and male dysfunction among others.
